Find out how you and your friends can stay safe on your Junior adventures!
Complete each step below to earn your Junior Safety Award. Make sure to ask your parent/guardian for permission before using any materials, going outside, or going online.
Step One
Home Safety Audit
Do a home safety audit to check for dangers around the house. Print off the Home Safety Checklist & ask your parent/guardian to help you check off each item on the list. Then make a plan with your family to check these items every year.
Step Two
Make an Emergency Evacuation Plan
It’s important to have a plan in the case of an emergency. Visit Ready.gov to Make Your Plan. Download the Red Cross’s Family Disaster Plan to write out your plan. Print out copies of the plan for each member of your household. Try practicing your plan!
Step Three
Weather Safety
It’s important to know weather signs and when to find safety. Check out the National Weather Service Safety Tips for what to do in different types of weather.
You can also use signs from nature to help predict the weather - find out how!
Make a weather vane to hep you predict the weather.
Step Four
Bike Safety
Check out these videos from the National Traffic Safety Administration. The first video is all about bike riding safety. It’s also important to have the right safety gear when riding a bike. Find out how to properly fit a bike helmet in the second video. Download and sign the Responsible Walking and Bicycling Safety Pledge from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Step Five
Identify Hazards
Take a walk along your favorite path, trail, or through your neighborhood. Make observations of anything that could be hazardous. What can you do to avoid those hazards? Download the Hazard Walk Observations sheet to help you take notes. Make sure to follow all safety guidelines when going outdoors.
